چکیده

We use firm-level data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis to document a new set of facts on the motives for foreign direct investment. We document that a key difference between ‘’horizontal” and ‘’vertical” affiliates is their size: Intra-firm trade is concentrated among a small number of large affiliates, while the median affiliate, smaller in size, reports no shipments to the parent and directs the bulk of its sales to unaffiliated parties in its country of operation. We find that the input-output coefficient between the industries of operation of the parent and the affiliate—a characteristic commonly used to signal a vertical relationship—is not related to the corresponding intra-firm flows of physical goods, raising doubts about input-output based characterizations of affiliates. Using the affiliate-level data, we construct novel industry-country indexes for the intensity of vertical and horizontal activities of U.S. multinational firms. These indexes will make it possible, without directly having data on the destination of affiliate sales, to characterize the predominant type of affiliates in a particular country and industry. We are thankful for helpful comments from David Atkin, Pablo Fajgelbaum, Fritz Foley, Nicholas Sly, and Stephen Yeaple, as well as seminar participants at the European Economic Association Annual Meetings, London School of Economics, NBER ITI Spring Meeting, Columbia University, Princeton University, Society of Economic Dynamics, Rocky Mountain Empirical Trade Conference, Stanford University, Dartmouth College, UBC, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and UC San Diego. We would also like to thank William Zeile for help with the multinational affiliate data and comments on an early draft. Ruhl thanks the National Science Foundation for support under grant SES-0536970. The statistical analysis of firm-level data on U.S. multinational companies was conducted at the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Department of Commerce, under arrangements that maintain legal confidentiality requirements. The views expressed are those of the authors and do not reflect official positions of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Intrafirm Trade and Vertical Fragmentation in U.S. Multinational Corporations

Using firm-level data, we document two new facts regarding intrafirm trade and the activities of the foreign affiliates of U.S. multinational corporations. First, intrafirm trade is concentrated among a small number of large affiliates within large multinational corporations; the median affiliate ships nothing to the rest of the corporation. Second, we find that the input-output coefficient lin...

A Knowledge-Capital Model Approach of FDI in Transition Countries

This paper aims at assessing the nature of foreign direct investment (FDI) in transition countries. We provide an empirical application of the knowledge-capital model of multinationals (MNEs) to an original panel of a¢ liates of MNEs in seven transition countries. We succeed in proving that the strategies of MNEs are heterogeneous by looking at FDI ‡ows by sectors of activity and by source coun...

On the Role of Distance for Outward Foreign Direct Investment

This paper focuses on the estimation of three distance-related effects on outward foreign direct investment (FDI). (i) Distance harms vertical multinationals, since they engage in trade. (ii) It makes non-trading multinationals better off than exporters. (iii) This positive effect on horizontal FDI is expected to rise with bilateral country size due to the home market effect. The use of panel d...

Strategic Foreign Investments of South Korean Multinationals

Using unpublished data on foreign affiliates of South Korea for 2000-2004, we examine two possible motivations of foreign direct investment (FDI): factor proportion (vertical-FDI) or market access (horizontal-FDI). First of all, we find clear evidence of vertical FDI, which is considered an important part of the overall picture of South Korean FDI. Affiliate sales destined for exporting to the ...

Hold Your Enemies Closer: In Search of Positive Impacts of Horizontal Foreign Direct Investment on Domestic Firms

Existing studies have often failed to find positive impacts of horizontal FDI on domestic firms. We argue that the two effects underpinning the impacts of horizontal FDI (i.e., the positive spillover effect and the negative competition effect) have different degrees of attenuation with geographic distance. As FDI is often distributed unevenly across space, studies that do not account for the ge...
